Kemlyn Tan Bappe Studio Kemlyn Tan Bappe was born in Singapore. She is Nonya, a woman of Peranakan descent. The Peranakan are a colorful, ornate culture that is an inter-marraige between the Chinese and Malay people groups. The Peranankan have a unique cuisine, dance, dialect and a distinctive flair for color and ornate patterns in their art. Currently Kem lives in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa with her husband, Ed and their children, Catherine, Dorothy and Dietrich. Tan Bappe is the owner and artistic director of Galleria Imago Dei in Fairfield, Iowa and also the coordinator for World of Difference, Eastern Iowa Embassy. Her work is exhibited and collected locally and internationally. "Batik is part of my heritage. My Grandmother wore her "sarong kebaya" lace top with her batik wrap skirt every day. As a contemporary Nonya artist, I use resist and silk dyes in my work as well as acrylics and oils on canvas using batik patterning. My cultural heritage and love for the sea provides me with much material for exploration. Artful living is my goal. In embracing myself authentically, I hope to inspire others to celebrate themselves."
